Assam floods: Death toll rises to 87, over 1.28 lakh affected

Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation remained grim on Monday, with the cumulative death toll from this year’s deluge rising to 87, even as the number of affected districts fell to seven.
More than 1.28 lakh people across 380 villages continued to reel under floodwaters, while thousands remained displaced. The floods have also caused extensive damage to crops and infrastructure, officials said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the worst-hit districts are Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Biswanath. A total of 24 revenue circles remain affected, while 14,230 hectares of crop area are still submerged.
Sivasagar continues to account for the highest number of affected people, with 55,200 residents impacted, followed by Charaideo with 34,050, Jorhat with 20,209, Golaghat with 10,201 and Dhemaji with 8,333.
Officials said 55 relief camps and relief distribution centres are operational across the affected districts, sheltering 11,066 people. Another 184 people are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres located outside the camps.
Floodwaters have also left a significant trail of destruction. At least 878 houses have suffered partial damage, while 302 houses have been fully or severely damaged.
In addition, 301 cattle sheds and huts have been damaged. The disaster has affected 34,471 animals, while more than 54,500 poultry have reportedly been washed away, highlighting the severe impact of the floods on the rural economy.
Meanwhile, authorities have reported damage to roads and bridges at multiple locations, particularly in Dhemaji, Charaideo, Biswanath and Cachar. Floodwaters and erosion have disrupted connectivity in these areas, and restoration work is underway.
