Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state has filed a case against the organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) and requested the Centre ban it, NDTV reported.

On Thursday, eleven members of the organisation were arrested by NIA in Assam, along with many from various states across the country, alleging terrorist links.

We have filed a case against PFI protesters. We are trying to see who instigated it," NDTV quoted CM Sarma.

On Thursday, NIA and ED launched a massive raid across 15 states and arrested 106 PFI members.

The Assam government has been consistently requesting to ban the PFI. Since PFI is spread across the country, it is difficult for only one state to go after them, Mr Sarma said.

The Assam government has repeatedly been requesting a ban on the organisation, but the PFI is spread across the country, and it is difficult for a single state to cover them all, Sarma stated, adding that they are investigating the nexus between PFI and terror cells.

The CM claimed that the organisation creates an ecosystem, and based on it, people are attracted to terror activity.

The Thursday raids arrested 22 people of PFI from Kerala, recording the maximum number of arrests, including its chairman OMA Salam. Officials claimed that the pan India raids and arrests were the largest investigation process against PFI.

The CM said that Assam police would probe the alleged PFI links with Al-Qaeda-backed terror cells busted in the state in recent times.
