Arunachal Pradesh: The Kibithu military garrison in Arunachal Pradesh has been named after the late General Bipin Rawat to honour India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He had passed away in a helicopter crash in December 2021 along with 12 other military personnel.

State Governor Brig BD Mishra (Retd) and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, senior military, and civilian dignitaries were present at the ceremony to rename the camp after General Rawat. His daughters were also present at the event, reported ANI.

A grand gate built as per Arunachal Pradesh's traditional architectural style was inaugurated by the Governor. Army officials said a "majestic life-size mural" of the General was also unveiled in his honour. The 22 Km road stretches from Walong to Kibithu named General Bipin Rawat Marg by the CM Pema Khandu.

CM Pema Khandu tweeted: "In a glowing tribute to the courage, valour, and patriotism of First Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, happy to have dedicated the 22 Km-road stretches from Walong to Kibithu as Gen Bipin Rawat Marg, today." He shared images from the ceremony.

General Rawat commanded a Battalion 5/11 Gorkha Rifles as a Colonel at Kibithu from 1999-2000. He has contributed greatly to the security structure of the region which is set close to the Lohit Valley. It is considered an important location from the military perspective.
