Army Captain faces Court Martial for "fake" encounter in Kashmir

Srinagar/New Delhi: Indian Army reportedly hinted at the need for "disciplinary proceedings" in the killings of three civilians in Shopian district on July 18, 2020.
Court Martial has been initiated against a Captain involved in the alleged encounter that left dead Imtiyaz Ahmed, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammed Ibrar, all hailing from Rajouri district.
Army Captain Bhoopendra Singh is facing proceedings in the killings of these civilians dubbed as "terrorists" in Amshipura village.
Soon after the incident, following protests, there were doubts over the killings and the Army promptly constituted a court, according to IANS.
The court of inquiry found prima facie evidence against the troops that had "exceeded" powers vested under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
A special investigation team constituted by the Jammu and Kashmir police filed a chargesheet against three including Captain Bhoopendra Singh for " staging a fake encounter" killing three men in Shopian district.
The probe reportedly found that Captain Singh had given wrong information to his superiors and the police about the recovery made during the encounter.
The other two named by the police in its chargesheet are Tabish Nazir and Bilal Ahmed Lone, both civilians.
After summary of evidence was completed in the last week of December 2020, the court of inquiry started.
In October 2020, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the three families and assured them that justice will be done, the report said.
