Anek is about Indian identity, says Ayushmann Khurrana after the trailer drop
text_fieldsAyushmann Khurrana is known for choosing films that tug at the reality of Indian society. And this time, he has chosen to bring forth the geopolitics of the northeast region of India. After the trailer dropped, the actor said director Anubhab Sinha wants the audience to think about Indian identity.
The trailer of the film has already created buzz for the action-thriller set amidst a rebellion. The three minutes are filled with several empathetic questions about a minority group who are Indians but are often victims of racism.
Ayushmann Khurrana said the director was very clear he wanted to make an engaging story that would also make people ponder our identity as Indians. He plays an undercover cop charged with furthering the peace accord between the Indian government and a leader of secessionist groups.
One of the central characters of the film is seen pointing out how the majority of India refers to the people of North East India as 'chinki', a racist slur referring to people with oriental features, even though it is a crime under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The actor says Anek is a special film to him because it pointedly asks and hopefully answers a question: "We are so diverse, different, and unique as Indians but do we celebrate that and make it our strength?"
He added that he always hunted for "clutter-breaking content" and Anek rests at the top of the pile. The trailer of the film is already sparking conversations. Khurrana said he is happy to see that it struck a chord in the hearts of Indians.
"The fact that people pan India are voicing the need for unity and inclusivity after watching the trailer of 'Anek' is enough validation for me as an artist," said the actor.
Anek will hit theatres on May 27.
