Andhra Medico succumbs after being run over by drunk youths, probe on

Hyderabad: A 28-year-old medico who was critically injured after being run over by a car allegedly driven by two drunk youths at a mall in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajamahendravaram on August 3 succumbed to her injuries at a hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday.
K. Priyanka, a first-year postgraduate medical student, was pronounced dead by doctors at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad, at 3.25 p.m. She had been on a ventilator since the incident, and doctors had earlier declared her brain-dead.
A native of Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district, Priyanka was pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram, in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district.
Priyanka was coming out of the mall on a scooty with her friend Umesh on the night of August 3 when a speeding car rammed into their two-wheeler. She suffered grievous injuries and was initially admitted to a local hospital before being shifted to Hyderabad.
After the postmortem examination, her body will be taken to Eklaspur village in Gadwal district for the last rites.
Earlier on Sunday, police had registered a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide against Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards, who allegedly rammed their car into Priyanka’s two-wheeler while under the influence of alcohol.
East Godavari district Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore told the media that a case under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to attempt to commit culpable homicide, had been registered against the accused.
He said the police would invoke more stringent provisions, depending on the circumstances, to seek the harshest punishment for those found guilty. With Priyanka’s death on Sunday, the police will now alter the section to culpable homicide.
The police investigation found that the accused allegedly hit the scooty with their car three times while attempting to flee after assaulting mall staff.
According to the SP, mall staff had stopped Daswanth and Edwards from entering the premises after finding them drunk. The two allegedly argued with and assaulted the staff. When mall security personnel attempted to catch them, they tried to escape in their car.
The accused allegedly drove rashly at high speed and rammed the scooty at the mall gate, running over Priyanka before fleeing the scene.
Priyanka, who was injured in the incident, was rushed to a local hospital. Police received information about the incident from the hospital at around 10 p.m.
Based on Umesh’s statement, police registered a case and arrested the two accused.
The SP also said there was no political pressure on the police and that, following the direction of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the case was being investigated impartially.
Earlier, Priyanka’s father Venkatesh met police officers and sought stringent action against the accused. He later told the media that the assurances given by the police had cleared his doubts.
Venkatesh said the family had full faith in the police investigation and the judiciary and hoped that they would get justice.
