Abdul Rashid criticises LG’s call for stricter laws against Kashmir Jamaat-e-Islami
text_fieldsLok Sabha member Sheikh Abdul Rashid expressed strong disapproval of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s recent call for stricter laws to prevent organisations like Jamaat-e-Islami from participating in elections on Wednesday. Rashid, who represents Baramulla, questioned Sinha’s stance and defended Jamaat-e-Islami against accusations of divisiveness.
In a sharp critique, Rashid contrasted the BJP's actions with those of Jamaat-e-Islami. He accused the BJP of spreading communal hatred and violence, asserting that their actions have caused significant harm to the Muslim community and exacerbated divisions in India.
In contrast, Rashid defended Jamaat-e-Islami, highlighting its contributions to the social, moral, and educational sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. He suggested that the organisation is focused on seeking political resolutions rather than engaging in harmful activities.
Rashid also challenged Sinha’s assertion that Jamaat-e-Islami poses a threat to democratic values. He argued that if the Lieutenant Governor had his way, he would impose extreme measures against the people of Kashmir, questioning the fairness of such an approach. Rashid underscored that Jamaat-e-Islami’s involvement in electoral politics or pursuit of political solutions should not be deemed a criminal act.
As Jammu and Kashmir commenced its first phase of Assembly elections, Rashid urged voters to reject political entities that he claims have historically deceived them. He accused the National Conference and the PDP of promoting corruption, nepotism, and misgovernance, which he argues have undermined the genuine struggle for Kashmiri rights.
Rashid called for a shift in the political landscape, expressing hope that the electorate would embrace new alternatives and move away from traditional political families that he believes have failed to address the region’s issues effectively.
Rashid conveyed his determination to continue advocating for the people of Kashmir, regardless of the election outcome. He stated his commitment to remain engaged with the local populace and to challenge established political dynasties if necessary.
Rashid emphasised that his motivation stems from a desire to offer a credible alternative and to address the grievances of Kashmiri citizens.
