Hyderabad: In Telangana, six students committed suicide on Tuesday within 24 hours of the arrival of intermediate exam results. Intermediate is equivalent to Class 11 and 12, NDTV reported.

When five deaths were reported in Hyderabad, one was reported in Nizamabad.

In Hyderabad’s Vanasthalipuram, a 17-year-old girl died committed the dreadful act, while in Raidurgam, a 16-year-old girl. The latter was a first-year intermediate student. In Panjagutta, it was a second-year who committed suicide.

In Neredmet and Saifabad, two second-year intermediate students killed themselves on Tuesday. In Nizamabad’s Armoor, a first-year intermediate student failed the exam and committed suicide.

It was in April, a tribal student committed suicide after fears of not getting enough marks to secure a seat for MBBS. He was a student at a government-run residential school in the Mahbubabad district of Telangana. The person, Gugaloth Krishna, had scored 890 marks out of 1,000 in his Intermediates.

Andhra Pradesh witnessed nine suicides two weeks ago, within 48 hours of publishing Class 11, 12 results there.

Telangana has a history of student deaths following intermediate results, reports NDTV. After six students took the extreme step in December 2021, the government declared everyone as passed, aiming to reduce stress on students and backing them to appear for intermediate final-year exams.

Post the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone in the intermediate first year was promoted to the second, provisionally. When exams were conducted in October, 51 per cent failed.
