Uttar Pradesh: Four married women in the state made away with the first installment of the Central government’s housing scheme, landing their husbands and the officials in trouble.
The women each received ₹ 50,000 in their bank accounts from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), a flagship house development scheme, before fleeing with their lovers.
The money was deposited in the accounts of the four women beneficiaries of Nagar Panchayat Belhara, Banki, Zaidpur and Siddhaur of the district, according to NDTV.
PMAY offers houses to those belonging to economically weaker section (EWS), and lower and middle income groups.
The schemes ensures the female head of the family be the owner or co-owner of the house, according to NDTV.
Hence the four women turned out to be the beneficiaries of the scheme, which they appropriated before deserting their husbands.
The incident came to light after officials responsible for overseeing the scheme came to check the progress of the construction.
Saurabh Tripathi, the project officer for DUDA, (the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA), sent a notice to the four families, demanding to begin the work, but there was no development even after the notice.
Afterwards the four husbands approached the authorities, asking them not to credit the second installment of PMAY to their wives’ accounts as they ran away with the first installment.
District officials are clueless as to how to recover the money these beneficiaries.
The husbands are in fear if they will get a notice of recovery from the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) over the money they have not received.
