4 killed as Calicut-Bengaluru bus crashes in Karnataka
text_fieldsBengaluru: Four people were killed on the spot in a tragic road accident early Monday after a private bus travelling from Calicut to Bengaluru lost control and crashed into roadside fencing on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway near Sankalagere village in Channapatna taluk of Karnataka’s Ramanagara district.
The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Mohammed Farhan and 45-year-old Sulfi from Kozhikode in Kerala, 45-year-old Rasheed from Kalasipalya in Bengaluru, and Saker from Annepalya in Adugodi.
According to police, the bus, operated by PK Travels, met with the accident around 4.10 a.m. Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver may have dozed off, leading to the crash. The impact was severe, killing four passengers instantly, while the vehicle continued moving for nearly 100 metres after hitting the fencing.
Two passengers — Abdul and Allen from Kannur in Kerala — sustained injuries and have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Police said the bus had departed from Calicut late Sunday night and was carrying 42 passengers at the time of the incident. Officials noted that the absence of a crash barrier could have resulted in a greater tragedy, which was narrowly averted.
The Channapatna traffic police rushed to the scene, conducted an inspection, and registered a case. The driver, identified as Riyaz, has been taken into custody for questioning.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured have been shifted to Channapatna Government Hospital. Further investigation is underway.
In a similar incident on December 25, 2025, at least six people, including a five-year-old girl, were burnt alive and 21 others injured after a sleeper coach bus caught fire following a collision with a container truck on National Highway 48 at Javanagondanahalli in Chitradurga district. A total of 32 people, including the driver and conductor, were on board, with several passengers managing to escape after the fire broke out.
