38 students hospitalised after mid-day meal at Telangana govt school

Hyderabad: At least 38 students of Bodiyathanda Government Primary School in Konijerla mandal, Telangana, were rushed to Khammam Government Hospital on Friday after suffering food poisoning, with 10 reported in critical condition.
The incident comes a day after a similar episode in Sangareddy district, where 45 students fell ill after consuming mid-day meals at a government primary school.
It is not immediately clear what caused the food poisoning. The affected students showed symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain. Villagers, parents, and school staff immediately arranged for their transfer to the hospital, where medical teams are closely monitoring all patients and providing necessary treatment.
Doctors confirmed that around 10 students remain in critical condition, while the rest are stable.
Following the incident, the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) and other officials visited Khammam Government Hospital to assess the situation and interact with hospital staff regarding the students’ conditions.
In the previous day’s incident on January 29, reports indicated that the 45 students in Venkatapur village, Sangareddy district, complained of a foul smell from one of the curries served as part of the mid-day meal. However, authorities allegedly ignored the complaints, after which students began vomiting and experiencing stomach pain. A total of 23 students were shifted to Narayankhed Government Hospital for treatment.
Both incidents have raised concerns over food safety and hygiene standards in government-run school meal programmes in Telangana.
