3 arrested after video of woman stripped, paraded goes viral
text_fieldsThree persons have been arrested in Ulhasnagar near Mumbai after a video showing a woman allegedly being assaulted, stripped, having her hair cut and being paraded with a garland of slippers went viral on social media. The incident was reportedly linked to a dispute over temple entry.
According to the Thane Police, both the woman and the accused belong to the Vaghri community and work as balloon sellers. Police said cases had been registered against both sides.
The accused, who are reportedly relatives of the woman, alleged that she had insulted their deities, following which they had instructed her not to enter the temple, Indian Express reported.
Shankar Avtade reportedly said that the incident took place on Thursday in the Vitthal Wadi area of Ulhasnagar. Two of the accused were arrested on Friday, while another was taken into custody on Saturday.
The police officer stated that the accused had alleged the woman made derogatory remarks about their deities and that investigators were verifying those claims. He also reportedly noted that disputes had existed between the two sides earlier and that an FIR had previously been filed against the woman by the accused.
According to Avtade, police had so far arrested three persons seen assaulting the woman in the video and were searching for four others. He added that investigators would examine CCTV footage and record statements from witnesses to establish the facts, as several rumours were circulating regarding the incident.
An FIR has reportedly been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections related to voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, intentional insult and unlawful assembly.
