Bengaluru: Twenty four patients died at a district Covid hospital in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar on Sunday after they ran out of the oxygen supply, said official reports.

"The deaths were reported after there was a fall in oxygen supply between 12 am to 2 am on Sunday night," a senior official at the hospital informed,as reported by NDTV.

However, according to the district administration, as many as 12 patients died due to lack of oxygen as the hospital ran short of supply of the critical gas, while others died due to various co-morbid conditions.

Dr M R Ravi, Deputy Commissioner, Chamarajanagar said, "A total of 24 deaths have happened between Sunday morning and Monday morning. While 23 have died in the district hosptial, one person has died at a private facility. We can not say that all patients have died due to lack of oxygen."

Meanwhile,Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has spoken to the district collector about the incident and called an emergency Cabinet meeting for tomorrow (Tuesday). State Home Minister Basavaraja Bommai, meanwhile, has asked the DGP-IGP Praveen Sood to investigate the matter and submit a comprehensive report for further action.

Karnataka reported 37,733 fresh COVID-19 cases, 21,149 recoveries, and 217 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The number of active cases in the state stands at 4,21,436 with 11,64,398 recoveries.
