Cooch Behar: At least 10 pilgrims participating in the Kanwar Yatra to fetch holy waters of ganga died from electrocution in West Bengal's Cooch Behar late on Sunday night.

The truck, en route to Jalpesh, carrying kanwariyas alongside other passengers may have short circuit from the wiring of the generator of the DJ system in the vehicle, according to reports sourcing the police.

The police reportedly said that 10 people were declared dead by the attending medical officer here and reports added that 19 others got injured in the electrocution.

Of those rushed for emergency care at Changrabandha BPHC, 16 people were referred to Jalpaiguri hospital for better treatment.

The incident took place, according to Mathabhanga Additional Superintendent of Police, Amit Varma, at around midnight at Dharla Bridge under Mekhliganj Police Station.

The officer also said as per the preliminary inquiry, electrocution occurred due to wiring of the generator of the DJ system which was fitted in the back of the vehicle. Police seized the vehicle but the driver reportedly fled the scene.

Further investigation into the matter is underway, police said.
