Expert who viewed Kangana’s ‘Emergency’ terms it ‘Sympathetic’, albeit with a rider
text_fieldsNew Delhi: A ‘subject expert’ said that the BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s movie on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is “factual” and “sympathetic”.
Historian Makkhan Lal, whom the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) picked to view the movie, said that even the Congress could not have done a better job, The Indian Express reported.
Makkhan Lal, who co-authored NCERT’s history textbooks during NDA 1 regime, gave a positive review for “Emergency’ amid misgivings regarding the use of facts in the movie.
The film’s release, previously set for September 6, has been delayed as CBFC certification is yet to give certification.
The CBFC told the Bombay High Court on September 18 that it had invited a ‘subject expert’ due to ‘the narrative and subject of the film’.
Subsequently, the court directed the CBFC to decide on the movie’s certification by September 26.
Makkhan Lal told The Indian Express that the movie is not at all partial, adding Kangana had not deviated even 0.01% from the facts, further saying ‘even the Congress could not have made a better historical film on Mrs Gandhi’.
The historian made a suggestion too, saying that instead of ending the movie with Indira Gandhi’s death, which he said would create troubles, it should show in 20 to 30 seconds Rajiv Gandhi’s statement of ‘when a tree falls’, alongside the subsequent massacre of Sikhs.
‘Otherwise, it is going to be a problem because it will become a one-sided film,’ he was quoted as saying.
Lal, a fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation and also associated with Aligarh Muslim University, also said that he had submitted his points in writing to the CBFC.
