Chennai: Tamil Actor Vijay Sethupathi won the Best Actor Award at the Indo-French International Film Festival for his role in 'Maamanithan'. The film directed by Seenu Ramasamy also won the award for Best Picture.

Ramasamy took to Twitter to announce the news and congratulate his lead actor. He wrote: "Congratulations Vijay Sethupathi for Best Actor and Yuvan Shankar Raja for Best Picture. Thank you Indo-French International Film Festival."

The critically acclaimed film has been garnering praise since its release. Director Shankar described it to be "a realistic classic" and said Sethupathi deserved a national award for the performance.

A week ago, Maamanithan also won a Gold medal at the Tokyo Film Awards in the Best Asian Film category. The film was released on 24 June after being delayed for five years.

The name of the movie 'Maamanithan' roughly translates to "great human". It follows an auto driver named Radhakrishnan played by Vijay Sethupathi. The sincere and honest man's life revolves around his wife, his wife, and his two children. While his kids attend a government school, he dreams of sending them to a private school where they can get a better education.

His life gets to a turning point when he makes a deal with a real estate businessman who cons him. Radhakrishnan and his family are left to face the consequences of the fraud. The rest of the story follows the simple auto driver trying to find the man who cheated him and his villagers.
