Chennai: At Island Ground in Chennai, where late actor-politician Vijayakanth is lying in state, "Thalapathy" Vijay paid respects to the icon on Thursday. In an internet video, Vijay can be seen walking through a crowd of admirers while clearly upset, just before a shoe flies in his direction and hits him.

A person walking next to Vijay throws the shoe back in the direction it came from, but Vijay doesn't turn around. Although the reason behind Vijay's apparent targeting is unknown, a spokesman for one of star Ajith's fan organisations released a statement condemning the assault. He shared, “We #Ajith fans strongly condemneding this disrespect behaviour to Vijay. whoever it may be, we should respect when they came to our place. Throwing slipper to @actorvijay is totally not acceptable 👎🏻 Stay strong #Vijay.” Vijay and Ajith’s fans have clashed many times in the past, Indian Express reported.

Captain Vijayakanth passed away due to pneumonia in Chennai on Thursday. The actor was on ventilator support after testing positive for Covid-19. His funeral is being held on Friday.

Rajinikanth attended the burial as well to honour the late actor.

Box office hits including Chatriyan, Sattam Oru Iruttarai, Vallarasu, Ramana, Engal Anna, Senthoora Poove, Pulan Visaranai, Honest Raj, and Chinna Gounder were among Vijayakanth's most well-known works. The title "Captain" was bestowed upon him for the 1991 motion picture Captain Prabhakaran.
