Spanish remake of Drishyam to begin filming in June
text_fieldsThe Drishyam franchise is set to expand further with a Spanish remake scheduled to begin filming in June.
Producer Rodrigo Espinel confirmed the project at the International Film Festival of Delhi. He said the remake is being developed with a Mexican production partner that acquired the intellectual property rights.
Espinel said Spain was chosen partly because of its tax incentives. “The concept can be adapted perfectly to Spanish culture. So we have now started working on it, and we are going to start shooting next June. It has a Spanish director and a top Spanish cast,” he said.
Plans for international remakes were first announced in February 2024 after producers Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak acquired the remake rights for Drishyam and Drishyam 2 from Aashirvad Cinemas. At the time, remakes in the United States and South Korea were already being planned, while the Spanish version was still under discussion.
Espinel said the story works across cultures because it centres on a father trying to protect his daughter and a mother searching for her son. He said those themes make it easier to adapt without losing the essence of the original film.
The Hindi film Drishyam, released in 2015 and directed by Nishikant Kamat, was a remake of the 2013 Malayalam film starring Mohanlal. Its sequel, Drishyam 2, was released in 2022 and became a major success.
Drishyam 3 is scheduled for release on May 21, 2026, and a Hindi version of the third film is also in development.
