Mumbai: Actor Randeep Hooda has been cast as VD Savarkar, an upcoming biopic of 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar', set to start from June 2022, IANS reports.

The Mahesh V Manjrekar directorial, which highlights the Indian freedom struggle from a different view, will be shot at locations in London, Maharashtra and Andaman Nicobar Islands.

Randeep Hooda expressed his happiness to don the role and said that Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated and influential of many unsung heroes, and his story must be told. He added that the role would be challenging to play.

Director Mahesh called the film an edgy cinematic narrative and said that now is the right time to tell those ignored stories. He was working on the subject for almost a year.

The movie will be financed by Anand Pandit from Anand Pandit Motion Pictures and Sandeep Singh and Sam Khan from Legend Studios. It will be co-produced by Roopa Pandit and Jay Pandya.

Hooda further said that he is excited to collaborate with producer Sandeep for another outing after 'Sarabjit', another biopic released in 2016. Mahesh also expressed his happiness in joining hands with Sandeep saying that he was waiting for a chance to work with him.

Sandeep said that Randeep could create magic with his talent. Therefore, he could only think of him to play the controversial character of Savarkar, he said. Sandeep wonders why history books ignored Savarkar and said his contributions deserve mention.

Meanwhile, producer Anand Pandit said this film would create more engaging public dialogue. With Mahesh and Randeep at the top, they would create something memorable for audiences, he added.
