Parvathy Resigns from AMMA, Condemns Edavelu Babu's Remarks on Actress

Kochi: The cold war between the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and Association of Malayalam Movie Artistss (AMMA) took a new turn on Monday night with Malayalam actress Parvathy Thiruvothu announcing her resignation from AMMA in response to certain comments made by Edavela Babu, who represents AMMA.

"In 2018, when my friends resigned from A.M.M.A, I stayed back thinking at least a few should continue to work within a broken system and help repair it," wrote Parvathy on Facebook. "But after watching A.M.M.A General Secretary's statement while he was speaking to Reporter TV's Nikesh Kumar, I have abandoned all hope that anything will ever change within this association. His utterly disgusting and mortifying remark comparing a woman member who had been badly let down by this organisation and consequently left it to a dead person is beyond correction."

The actress was responding to an interview in which Edavela Babu was asked to comment on whether the actress in the Dileep movie would play a role in the upcoming '20/20' film. Babu had responded that she had resigned and was "as dead" to the film association.

He later clarified that he was referring to her character in the original 20/20 film and expressed his sorrow that his words were taken out of context.

Speaking to Times of India, Babu clarified: "I can't do anything if they are finding a new meaning to what I said. I was asked if (the survivor) would be part of the sequel of Twenty 20. I said how can someone who died be part of the film? I didn't clarify that the character she played in the movie died. But that's what I meant by what I said."

Parvathy's strongly-worded resignation lambasted the AMMA organisation for their hypocritical stance on women's welfare in the film industry and included a demand that Babu resign from his position as General Secretary, terming his comparison of the actress to a dead person as "nauseating".
