Paris: In solidarity with Iranian demonstrators, Oscar-winning actors Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche as well as other French movie and music celebrities can be seen cutting off their hair in a video released on Wednesday.

"For freedom," Binoche said as she brandished a large handful of her own hair in front of the camera after cutting it off with a pair of scissors. The hashtagged "HairForFreedom" video surfaced as anti-government rallies envelop Iran. They were brought on by the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been detained for allegedly breaking the strict dress code of the Islamic Republic.

An Instagram account called "soutienfemmesiran," which translates to "support women in Iran" posted a video of Cotillard, Binoche, and numerous other ladies chopping off strands of hair.

"These women, these men are asking for our support. Their courage and their dignity oblige us," said a post with the video, Associated Press reported.

"We have decided to respond to the appeal made to us by cutting — us too — some of these locks."

Actress Charlotte Rampling and singer Jane Birkin's daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg were among the other ladies who participated. Gainsbourg was also seen cutting a lock of her mother's hair in a video.
