‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ failed as it was ‘slightly dark’: Kareena Kapoor

Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, who played the role of Rupa D’Souza in the 2022 film Laal Singh Chaddha, revealed that Aamir Khan, who portrayed the titular character, was disheartened by the film's failure.

Kareena said that although she didn't discuss the film's box office numbers with Aamir immediately after its release, she sensed his disappointment when they met several months later.

In an interview with Midday India, Kareena emphasized that a film's box office performance shouldn't be the sole measure of her relationships, particularly with someone like Aamir. She also reflected on the reasons behind the film's lack of success.

"Laal Singh Chaddha" had a sluggish start in India, earning just Rs 11.7 crore. Its collections failed to gain momentum in the following days, culminating at Rs 61.36 crore, falling short of the Rs 100 crore milestone.

Kareena noted that Aamir had fully immersed himself in his character, but perhaps the audience wasn't prepared for such an intense and emotional film in the post-COVID-19 environment.

She said, “Aamir was living that character. He had become Laal.” On being asked what in her opinion led to the film’s debacle, Kareena added, “Covid had just happened and everything was slowly opening up and people maybe wanted something more energetic and fun. It (the film) was slightly emotional.”

When asked if she would call Laal Singh Chaddha an ‘arthouse’ film, the actor said, “I wouldn’t say arthouse. Maybe there were these big names attached to the film like Aamir and me, they wanted something more coming out this time. I think it was slightly dark.”

Despite the film's box office disappointment, Kareena's relationship with Aamir and the film's director, Advait Chandan, remained intact.

Aamir has taken a break from acting for the past year, focusing on his production work and spending quality time with his family, something he had not done in over three decades.

He recently announced his next project, "Sitare Zameen Par," which is expected to be a departure from his previous work, promising to bring laughter and entertainment to the audience.

In an interview with News18, Aamir said, “I have not spoken about it publicly and I won’t be able to say much now also. But I can tell the title. The title of the film is Sitare Zameen Par. You must have remembered my film ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and the name of this film is ‘Sitare Zameen Par’ because we are moving 10 steps ahead with the same theme. Taare Zameen Par was an emotional film. This film will make you laugh. That film made you cry, this one will entertain you.”
