Los Angeles: Hollywood actor Jason Momoa took to Instagram to show off his head tattoo honouring his Hawaiian heritage. In a short video, he excitedly announced that he has something special to show his fans and took off the hat.

The tribal tattoo is on the side of his partially shaved head. The actor hasn't gotten rid of his long hair. He also said: "Chief of war coming, baby!" The Game-of-Thrones actor's team said that he got his head and neck tattooed. "It's a huge piece, it's related to his Hawaiian roots and culture."

He was boarding Hawaiian Airlines to New Zealand and captioned the video: "Here we go. Hawaiian Airlines is back. We're going to New Zealand. Hawaii to Aotearoa. Mahalo to my Ohana for being there for me yesterday. It was a true honour 20 years in the making." He also commented on the airline's efforts to reduce single-use plastic.

This is not the only tattoo the Honolulu native has to honour his heritage. He has other pieces on his body including one wrapping around his left forearm. The tattoo is his family's crest.

Born to a father with Native American ancestry and a mother with German, Irish, and Native American ancestry but self-identified Pawnee ancestry, the actor spent his formative years in Hawaii and moved stateside as a teen. After receiving several questions about his ethnicity, he said he identifies with his Samoan descent. The actor said that he is Hawaiian to the core.

He is involved with several initiatives to save the islands of Hawaii. Momoa also said that his lineage can be traced back to the indigenous people of New Zealand. His Polynesian heritage also landed him his most iconic role as Aquaman. The team wanted an actor who appreciated his tribal roots.
