Citing the films production quality and it's director's excellent craft, the Film Federation of India announced that the Malayalam film 'Jallikattu' would be representing India at the 93rd Academy Awards. 'Jallikattu' is the first Malayalam film to be nominated to compete in the Best International Feature film category..

The film really "brings out the raw problems that are there in human being," said jury chairperson Rahul Rawail during the press conference.

The film was selected from amongst a pool of 20 competitors including Geetu Mohandas' 'Moothon', Jhanvi Kapoor's 'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl', 'The Sky is Pink', Vidya Balan's 'Bulbull'and Ayushman Khurrana-Amitabh Bacchan starrer 'Gulabo Sitabo'.

'Jallikattu' made its world debut at the Toronto Film Festival last year in October where it received widespread critical acclaim, later bagging director Lijo Jose Pellissery award for Best Director at the International Film Festival of India held in Goa.

The Academy Awards will be held on April 15th in 2021 in Los Angeles.
