New York: The Writers Guild of America (WGA) on Tuesday said Hollywood writers are ending their five-month strike, the Guardian reported.

The decision comes after union leaders approved an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Writers are free to start working from midnight onwards as the strikes ends after five marathon days of talks.

The WGA called the three-year agreement with Hollywood studios as “exceptional’, adding that there are ‘meaningful gains and protections for writers’.

The agreement, which the 11,500 members of WGA vote to ratify, offers pay rise and protections regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

The writers began striking on 2 May, which over the course of months became the longest to happen in Hollywood in decades, as per BBC.

Two months into the strike, members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) joined on 13 July due to issues of over pay and the use of artificial intelligence in production.

The strike costs the US economy around $5bn (£4.08bn), according to Milken Institute economist Kevin Klowden,

The crippling strike has affected the several American shows including Billions, The Handmaid's Tale, Hacks, Severance, Yellowjackets, among others such as late-night talk shows.

However, the situation has not normalized despite WGA ended strike because the actors’ union continues striking to improve wages, working conditions, and health and pension benefits.
