Controversial crowning and de-crowning at Mrs Sri Lanka beauty pageant
text_fieldsA series of dramatic events unfurled at the crowning event of the National Mrs Sri Lanka Beauty Pageant, part of the Mrs World beauty pageant series for married women, when the crowned winner got de-crowned.
The announced winner of the Mrs Sri Lanka pageant, Pushpika De Silva, was to be crowned, but the reigning Mrs World Caroline Jurie, called out that the crown does not belong to divorcees and hence the runner-up is worthy of the title instead. Jurie then forcibly took off the crown from De silva's head and placed it on the first runner-up, titling her the winner. Throughout the series of events, celebratory music played in the background, as per the video footages.
Pushpika, however, later clarified on Facebook that she was not divorced and was only separated, adding that if it had not been allowed, she should not have been given a chance to participate. Meanwhile, local media has reported that Mrs Jurie was granted bail after being arrested for allegedly injuring a pageant contestant in an on-stage live-in.
De Silva was reinstated as Mrs Sri Lanka, with the organizers handing over the crown during a news conference and apologizing for the mayhem as news broke out globally. Mrs Caroline Jurie is the winner of the Mrs World title in 2020 at the grand finale in Las Vegas, USA.
