Chennai : In a case concerning the import of a luxury car from the UK, the Madras High Court extinguished the adverse comments made by a single bench of the court in relation to actor Vijay.

The order of the single judge is expunged after a division bench of Justices Pushpa Sathyanarayana and Mohammed Shaffiq enjoined the single judge to remove statements in certain paragraphs.

The order of the single bench of Justice S.M. Subramaniam, rendered on July 13, 2021, was stayed by a division bench of Justices M. Duraiswamy and R. Hemalatha on July 26, 2021.

Vijay had sought an exemption from taxes on the Rolls Royce Ghost he imported from the UK, and the single judge had made adverse comments about the actor.

In response to the order of the single bench, Vijay had appealed through senior advocate and former Advocate General of Tamil Nadu Vijay Narayanan.

Lawyers for the actor had argued that the negative remarks from the single bench of the Madras High court had hurt him, since in several other cases, the court had rejected similar appeals for tax exemption without making such negative remarks.
