Thiruvananthapuram: K. Jayakumar, a renowned poet, author, and former Chief Secretary of Kerala, has been honored with the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for 2024. This award recognizes his impactful Malayalam poetry collection, 'Pingala Kesini', which delves into the erosion of societal values and prompts introspection. The collection was chosen from a shortlist of nine Malayalam works and includes a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation, and a memento.

Born on October 6, 1952, in Thiruvananthapuram, Jayakumar is a multifaceted individual who served Kerala in various significant administrative roles. A retired IAS officer from the 1978 batch, he has held prominent positions such as District Collector of Kozhikode, Secretary of Tourism and Culture, and Chief Secretary of Kerala between April and October 2012. After retiring, he became the founding Vice Chancellor of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University.

In addition to his administrative legacy, Jayakumar has made immense contributions to literature and the arts. He has authored numerous works in Malayalam and English, spanning poetry, prose, and translations. His translations of literary giants such as Rabindranath Tagore, Kahlil Gibran, and Rumi have received widespread acclaim. His literary achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions in 2021 and the Asan Poetry Prize.

Currently serving as the Director of Kerala Government's Institute of Management, Jayakumar's artistic pursuits extend beyond literature. He has penned lyrics for nearly 100 Malayalam films and various albums, television, and radio productions. His well-known songs include "Shaarike Ninnekanan...", "Kudajadriyil Kudikollum...", "Chandanalepa Sugandham...", and "Souparnikamritha Veechikal...". Additionally, his artistic talents are reflected in his work as a painter, with 17 solo exhibitions in India and abroad.

In discussing 'Pingala Kesini', Jayakumar describes the collection as a contemplation of the decline of moral values in modern society. It challenges readers to reflect on the preservation of humanity’s core principles. The collection's thematic depth and poetic brilliance have made it a significant contribution to Malayalam literature.
