Kuwait summoned Iran’s ambassador on Tuesday and handed him a formal protest note after the Kuwaiti oil tanker Kaifan was targeted while passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday evening.
The Foreign Ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Al-Mashaan summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Toutounchi over the attack, which injured several crew members on board the tanker.
Al-Mashaan described the strike as an act of aggression and said it came during continued Iranian attacks against Kuwait since February 28, 2026, along with provocative statements by Iranian officials.
Kuwait demanded that Iran immediately stop what it called unlawful attacks and said it reserves the right to take all necessary measures. The ministry held Tehran fully responsible for the tanker attack and its continued aggression against the country.
The General Staff of the Kuwait Armed Forces said air defence systems were intercepting hostile missiles and drones launched during the latest Iranian attacks. It urged the public to follow official safety instructions and said explosions heard in the country were caused by interception operations.
The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said several power generation and water desalination plants came under attack for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.
The strikes caused fires at several facilities, which emergency teams brought under control in coordination with Kuwait Fire Force and security authorities.
The ministry said damage assessments are under way and repair teams are working to restore affected sites. Several power generation units were taken offline as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain the stability of the electricity and water networks.
Separately, Chief of the General Staff Lt Gen Khaled Al-Shuraian met GCC Assistant Secretary-General for Military Affairs Maj Gen Salman Al-Fadala to discuss issues of mutual interest and ways to strengthen military cooperation among Gulf states.
In another statement, Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry condemned remarks by the Houthi military spokesman that it said contained false allegations against Saudi Arabia and threats to maritime navigation.
Kuwait called on the international community to ensure the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 on security and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
