Kuwait summons Iranian envoy over alleged interference in judicial affairs

Kuwait summoned Iran’s ambassador on Wednesday and handed him a protest note over an embassy statement that it said infringed on its sovereignty and challenged the independence of its judiciary.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad Al-Mashaan delivered the note to Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Totounji, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry described the Iranian embassy’s statement as blatant interference in Kuwait’s internal affairs and a violation of international laws and norms.

Al-Mashaan expressed Kuwait’s strong rejection and condemnation of any interference in rulings issued by its national courts.

He called on Iran to comply with international law and the United Nations Charter, particularly the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in other states’ domestic affairs.

He also urged adherence to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
