August 1st marked the 34th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, an event that triggered a significant international response and showcased the resilience of the Kuwaiti people. On this day in 1990, Iraq's forces launched a brutal invasion that led to widespread condemnation globally and horrific acts of violence against the citizens of Kuwait.
The invasion, described as a heinous crime against a peaceful nation, resulted in substantial death, destruction and disruption of vital infrastructure. The darkest hours saw the Iraqi military closing essential roads and destroying properties, inflicting severe hardships on the local population.
Despite the dire circumstances, the spirit of the Kuwaiti people remained unbroken. Residents formed resistance groups, not only to combat the invaders but also to maintain crucial services within the country. This international backing culminated in the formation of a coalition that successfully liberated Kuwait in February 1991. Even during the invasion, Kuwait maintained a notable level of humanitarian aid, with its GDP contributions to global relief efforts standing at 8.3 percent.
