'What a joke': outrage online over traffic curbs for Ambani wedding

Mumbai: As the marriage of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant was to take place from July 12 to July 15, the Mumbai administration has issued significant traffic restrictions for three days on several roads. This has triggered a massive outcry among netizens, with many questioning the move.

The Mumbai Traffic Police has announced many roads leading to the Jio World Convention Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), where the event is scheduled. The curbs will limit access to roads around the venue from 4:00 pm to midnight, which is complained to cause inconvenience to commuters who use the roads.

The traffic curbs include a complete ban on vehicular movement on the Kurla MTNL Road from Laxmi Tower Junction to Hotel Trident. However, the police have listed alternative routes for commuters till July 15.

What caused the public to be more infuriated was the Traffic Police advisory, calling the wedding a "public event;". Social media at large witnessed widespread criticism as many users expressed their anger over the restrictions and 'public event' terminology.

A user wondered when a private event becomes a public one. Another wrote that the user is carrying a police announcement as their entry card to the wedding and, "Pray for me folks," they wrote. A third one wondered why the government started involving in private events.

Another one asked why the public is disturbed by someone's marriage. "Is Anant Ambani's marriage a public event ??? Why is normal public disturbed for some one marriage ???" the user asked.

One user commented, "Public event? What a joke."

An X handle named Monal Jhaveri commented that it is very sad that citizens have to get harassed for a wedding and its multiple functions.
