Hyderabad family keeps body at home for three days due to lack of money for funeral

Hyderabad: A family in Hyderabad’s Jeedimetla locality reportedly lived with the body of an elderly relative for three days as they were unable to afford the funeral expenses, forcing the police to step in and perform the last rites.

The family, originally from Mahabubnagar, was residing in NLB Nagar near Shapur Nagar. The deceased, identified as 76-year-old Swami Dasane, had died nearly a week ago. Neighbours became suspicious after observing that no one from the family stepped out of the house for three days and also noticed a foul smell emanating from the premises.

Alerted by the locals, the Jeedimetla police reached the spot and registered a case. During the inquiry, officers found that the family, despite being in severe financial distress, had refused to seek help from others due to “pride”.

With the support of an NGO, Satya Harishchandra, the Jeedimetla police conducted the funeral on 4 December.

Jeedimetla circle inspector Gaddam Mallesh said to Siasat.com that the incident had occurred around 10 days ago and confirmed that a case of suspicious death had been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
