Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has officially confirmed the sighting of the new moon for Dhu al Hijjah, following observations by expert astronomers and moon sighting committees across the kingdom on Sunday evening. Monday will therefore be observed as the first day of Dhu al Hijjah in Saudi Arabia, and this year’s Eid al Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) is expected on Wednesday, May 27.
In Kerala, however, the crescent marking the start of Dhu al Hijjah 1447 AH was not sighted. With Dhul Qa‘dah completing 30 days, Tuesday, May 19, will be observed as the first day of Dhu al Hijjah there, and Eid al Adha will be celebrated on Thursday, May 28, subject to confirmation under the Islamic lunar calendar.
