Arresting Kappan among Yogi govt's routine: Muslim Youth League

New Delhi: The Muslim Youth League (MYL) India issued a release expressing its happiness in the Supreme Court decision, granting bail to journalist Siddique Kappan. Kappan was arrested under UAPA by the Uttar Pradesh government and was jailed for two years.

"We are extremely happy that the Supreme Court has granted bail to journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested and then jailed for two years under the UAPA by the UP government," the release, signed by Asif Ansari and Fyzal Babu, President and General Secretary of MYL read.

The release alleged that arresting Kappan, who was en route to Uttar Pradesh's Hathras to cover the gang-rape and murder of a teenager, was a routine of Yogi Adityanath's government.

"The UP police had claimed that the accused was trying to disturb law and order in Hathras and also alleged that the accused had links with a terrorist outfit," the MYL India release said.

It said that at a crucial time, Kappan's wife Raihanath came to the fore and fought for justice without fear. The MYL national committee had serviced all the support it could to her efforts as well as the cause, it said, adding that many strikes were staged protesting Kappan's imprisonment under the organisation's banner.

It further said that the issue was raised in both Houses of Parliament by Indian Union Muslim League MPs. The bail was availed through the intensive efforts of various organisations, activists, leaders and individuals, the release said.

"This time tells us to go for getting justice for thousands of innocent people who are jailed for many months and years without any reasonable grounds. Of course, we will move on," the release concluded.
