UPI payment failed, but money debited? Here’s what you must do
text_fieldsNew Delhi: A failed UPI payment can quickly turn into a double-payment nightmare when money leaves your bank account even though the merchant receives nothing. But experts advise users not to panic — and, most importantly, not to make another payment immediately.
The problem can occur when the interconnected systems handling a UPI transaction — including the sender’s bank, the recipient’s bank, and the payment app — experience a technical glitch or delay. Heavy transaction traffic during shopping rushes and festive periods can increase the chances of such failures.
If the transaction shows “Pending” or “Processing”, users should wait rather than attempting another payment. In many cases, the transaction is completed within seconds, or the debited amount is automatically reversed. Under NPCI guidelines, failed UPI transactions are generally expected to be resolved by the following day.
Users should preserve the transaction notification and note down the UPI transaction reference number. If the money is not returned within the applicable timeframe, the issue can be raised in the payment app’s transaction history section. Major platforms, including BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, provide options to report failed transactions.
If the issue persists, users should approach their bank, since the amount was debited from their account. If the bank’s response is unsatisfactory, a complaint can subsequently be filed under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
Before paying again, customers should also ask the merchant to check their bank records, as a delayed transaction may still reach the recipient. Keeping the UPI app updated and ensuring the linked mobile number is active can also help prevent payment complications.
