Adelaide: A surfer is presumed to be dead on the west coast of South Australia's Eyre Peninsula following a shark attack. The incident took place on Saturday and emergency services were called to a beach near the town of Elliston, about 650 km south of Adelaide.

Elliston only has a population of about 1,000. It is known for its rugged coastline and popular surfing spots.

Several surfers witnessed the attack on Saturday morning. They called emergency services and began searching the water by the sea and air. A damaged wetsuit was found in the area. Later, they also spotted a shark.

The police issued a statement saying: "A man is believed to have died following a shark attack at Walkers Rocks Beach. The 46-year-old surfer is the only person thought to have been attacked," reported Reuters.

Officials also thanked the local community and emergency services for their assistance in searching for the missing surfer. "It's not easy when there's a local involved, but we commend their strength and their want to assist." The police are planning to continue the search.

In February, a 16-year-old girl was also attacked by a shark in Western Australia. Australia has reported the most number of shark attacks after the US.
