Despite being ordered to surrender by the Russian ship, 13 Ukrainian soldiers were killed after refusing. Instead of surrendering, they told the Russian ship to "go f*** yourself".

In the course of the Russian invasion, an audio recording of this incident was published on social media, as well as other publications.

Ukrainian soldiers defending Snake Island in the Black Sea received a warning message from a Russian warship. After refusing, the warship opened fire and killed all 13.

According to reports in Ukrainian media, two Russian naval vessels approached Snake Island, which lies on the southeast border of Ukraine.

During the audio exchange, one of the Russian ships approached the outpost.

"This is a Russian warship, I repeat. I suggest you surrender your weapons and capitulate otherwise I will open fire. Do you copy?" the Russian ship said.

In response, one of the Ukrainian guards is heard saying, "This is it." He then appears to ask fellow guard, "Should I tell him to go f*** himself?"

Upon hearing "Just in case," the other guard tells him, "I would just like to be safe." The Ukrainian soldier then bluntly replies, "Russian warship, go f*** yourself."

An additional video from Snake Island shows two soldiers live streaming the incident. These soldiers are wearing military helmets and are outside.

As soon as one of the soldiers is heard yelling, a gunshot is heard. The video abruptly ends.

There were no survivors on Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, which was destroyed by the Russian ship.

"Last words for some incredibly courageous Ukrainians," said one Twitter user after hearing the audio clip. "Legends never die," added another.

During an address at the end of day one of Russia's attack on Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the courage displayed by these soldiers.

"On our Zmiinyi Island, defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically. But did not give up. All of them will be posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine," said Zelensky.

"May the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine live forever," the President added.

On Friday, Zeleniskiy vowed to remain in Kyiv as his troops faced off against Russian invaders spreading toward the capital in the biggest attack on Europe since World War Two.

As a result of President Putin's declaration of war on Thursday, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine by land, air, and sea. According to news agency Reuters, dozens of people have been killed.

Demonstrators gathered on public squares and in front of Russian embassies across the world on Thursday to denounce Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
