Protecting climate no crime: Greta Thunberg after brief detention

Luetzerath/Germany: Environmentalist Greta Thunberg said that protecting the climate is no crime. She tweeted so, resuming her campaign after being released from a brief detention in Germany for her protest against a coal mine expansion, Reuters reported.

Thunberg tweeted, "Yesterday I was part of a group that peacefully protested the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were kettled by police and then detained but were let go later that evening."

"Climate protection is not a crime," she said.

She was protesting against the destruction of a village, Luetzerath, for expanding an opencast coal mine owned by RWE, the German-based energy company.

Three police officers carried Thunberg away after detaining her. She was held by her arms and taken away to police vans from a spot near the mines in question. She was released later in the evening.

Describing the expansion of the mine as a betrayal of present and future generations, she accused Germany of being one of the largest polluters on the planet. Her protest has been highlighting the increasing tensions over the German administration's climate policy with the environmentalists. She argues that climate goals were forgotten after the energy crisis appeared due to the Russia-Ukraine war initiated.
