An elderly German woman has been arrested after she switched off her hospital roommate's life supportive system on Tuesday evening.

The 72-year-old patient twice turned off the ventilator because she was annoyed by the sound it made, The Guardian reported.

The woman was charged with suspected manslaughter after the incident was reported in the south-western city of Mannheim.

Police and prosecutors said the woman allegedly switched off the ventilator in the evening despite telling her the machine was vital for the patient.

The woman claimed to be "disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen device" first turned off the ventilator before 8pm, alleged the Mannheim public prosecutor's office and Mannheim police.

Even after the hospital staff informed her of the importance oxygen supply to the patient, she again switched off the device around 9 pm.

The 79-year-old patient on the ventilator had to be revived, authorities.

On Wednesday, the suspect was presented before a judge before she was taken to jail. Investigations are ongoing.
