Pakistan's first transgender news anchor attacked by gunmen
text_fieldsLahore: Marvia Malik, Pakistan's first transgender news anchor, was attacked by gunmen outside her residents in Lahore. She survived the attack and has now moved out of the city.
She was returning home from a pharmacy on Thursday night when two people opened indiscriminate fire, reported Dawn. She told the police that she had been receiving threatening phone calls and messages from unknown numbers for speaking up for the transgender community. She also revealed that she had come to the city a few days ago for surgery.
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) last year claimed that the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018 is "not in line with the Shariah because several of its provisions are inconsistent with Islamic principles. The CII also said the Transgender Persons Act may lead to "new social problems. Malik alleged that her activism is a major factor behind the assassination attempt.
The 26-year-old became Pakistan's first transgender news anchor. She earlier said that she wants to be an example for everyone and not just her country's trans community. Her family was not encouraging but she decided to pursue her dreams anyway.
