India not having permanent seat on UNSC absurd: Elon Musk

San Francisco: Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday called for the revision of the United Nations Security Council to include India, and South Africa collectively as permanent members in the UN body.

The American entrepreneur cited the ‘countries with excess power’ not wanting to give it up as the ‘problem’ hindering the revision.

Taking to X Musk said that India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council nevertheless being the most populous country on the planet is ‘absurd’.

‘At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don't want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd. Africa collectively should also have a permanent seat imo,’ Musk was quoted as stating.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on January 21 called for UN to reflect today’s world not that of 80 years ago, saying that Africa still has not a single Permanent Member in the Security Council.

‘How can we accept that Africa still lacks a single Permanent Member in the Security Council? Institutions must reflect today's world, not that of 80 years ago. September's Summit of the Future will be an opportunity to consider global governance reforms & re-build trust’ Guterres was quoted as stating.

India, a member of a group of nations called G4 that supports each other to get permanent membership of UNSC, is non-permanent member of the body for eight terms.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar previously referring to India not having a permanent membership on UNSC said that as things are not generously given, one has to seize it.

‘With each passing year, the feeling in the world is that India should be there, and I can feel that support...The world does not give things easily and generously; sometimes you have to take them,’ the EAM reportedly said.
