Kargil war veteran declared foreigner, detained in Assam

Guwahati: Just as millions in Assam are scrambling to prove they are Indians, a Kargil war veteran was detained and declared foreigner here.  

Reportedly police sent Mohammed Sana Ullah, 52, to a detention centre in Assam following an order of a Foreigners’ Tribunal.

Mohammed Sana Ullah served the Indian army for 30 years; however, the prescribed norms, which want residents of Assam to prove their families lived in the country before March 24, 1976, left him as a foreigner.

Ullah’s lawyer claimed that it was a case of mistaken identity, because the order cited him as a labourer who had come to India in 1971.

Meanwhile, his family said they had Assam land records dating back to 1935.
