Kochi cyber police recover over Rs 1 crore stolen in ‘digital arrest’ scam
text_fieldsKochi: The Kochi city cyber police have successfully recovered over Rs 1 crore stolen from an 81-year-old man in a ‘digital arrest’ online scam.
The incident took place in November last year, when the victim was duped of approximately Rs 1.30 crore. In this type of fraud, scammers impersonate law enforcement officials, falsely accuse individuals of illegal activities, and pressure them into transferring money to “resolve” the alleged case, according to a police statement issued on Saturday.
Thanks to timely intervention, around Rs 1.06 crore of the lost funds was recovered from a bank in Jammu and Kashmir.
After the victim filed a complaint, a case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, and the details were immediately uploaded to the National Cyber Crime Portal. Prompt investigation and technical measures enabled the police to freeze Rs 1,06,27,914 in a Srinagar-based bank account where the money had been transferred.
The investigation was conducted under the guidance of Kochi City Deputy Commissioner K S Shahansha IPS. Timely actions were executed by Cyber Crime Police Station Inspector Shemir Khan, ASI Girish Kumar, and CPO Robin, under the supervision of Cyber Police Station ACP Anilkumar.
Following court orders, the frozen amount was returned to the complainant.
Police emphasised that in cyber fraud cases, swift reporting and lodging complaints through the National Cyber Crime Portal significantly increase the chances of recovering lost funds.
