Thrissur: One study by KILA finds rise in domestic violence against women and children during lockdown.
If the complaints received on the help lines of agencies including Mitra, Sakhi, Bumika, Snehitha, Mahila Samkya were any indication.
Of the 188 complaints in the last 26 days, 102 reported physical assault, 79 reported psychological torture, 4 sexual harassment complaints, and 3 were of financial torture.
40 complainants linked financial crisis to the domestic violence, while 28 were from withdrawal symptoms, 13 fidelity issues, and 4 sexual frigidity issues are among others.
In 131 complaints husbands were the perpetrators, 23 issues were from husband’s parents, torture from children 10, and in 18 cases other members of the family were in the dock.
Most complainants were between the age of 20 and 40, and most complaints came from middle class families. Of the total complaints 93 were from general category, while 18 came from scheduled cast and tribes.
Complaints were settled with the help of police, counseling, medical help, and women’s commission.
Only a small number used the government facility for lodging their complaints. Meanwhile, non-availability of alcohol helped improve peace in families.
