Kozhikode:  Giving magisterial powers to state police will damage independent judicial system and lead to state terrorism,  said KA Shafeeq,  state general secretary of Welfare Party at a press conference here.

He said that through such steps the Pinarayi government's anti-democratic stance and autocratic leanings were becoming clear.   Through the proposed reform,  police will be armed with powers which have been handled by civil officers  so far and with this,  impartiality will become the first casualty.

He also pointed out that in the case pending with Supreme Court in which the move to give Delhi police magisterial powers has been questioned,  Kerala government is a respondent.  Therefore,  it is inscrutable that before the  disposal of the case the government has hastened to take this decision.

Shafeeq demanded that the government repeal the decision. M Joseph John,  Aslam Cheruvadi and   Musthafa Palazhi also were present at the press meet.
