Less rains: threat of power cut on in Kerala
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: A power crisis has come up in the state owing to the decline in power supply from the central pools.
A shortfall of 700 megawatt has been reported.
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has informed that efforts are being taken to borrow power from the power exchange.
KSEB has also said that there would be powercuts from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm in the evenings in certain areas if there is a shortage of supply.
There has been a drop in the supply of 200 megawatt and 266 megawatt from the central pools sourced from Talchar and from Koodankulam power plants respectively.
Within Kerala, hydroelectric plants at Lower Periyar, Panniyar and Peringalkuthu are not currently working owing to flood damages. The same is in the case of private plants like Kuthungal and Maniyar.
Steps have been taken to resume the production by rebuilding these power plants on a war footing.
With lesser rains, the use of electricity has significantly increased. Power usage in the 24 hours till Thursday morning came to around 66.40 million of which 33.70 million unit came from outside. 32.70 million unit of power was produced in the state.
Although the dams are full, power has to be sourced from outside for the necessary requirements.
