Kozhikode: Scrapping University Grants Commission (UGC) and introducing Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) is a threat to autonomy, says Calicut University.

This was revealed in the response report prepared by the University related to the implementation of the law. There is nothing specified in the law related to fair funding in public universities and encouraging higher education.

Government services must be ensured for weaker sections, minorities and backward sections of the society as well as women in the field of higher education. When the new commission comes into effect, this matter should be considered.

The committee with Pro Vice Chancellor Dr P Mohanan as the Chairman and Dr P Sivadasan as the convener pointed out that the existing functioning of the UGC should have been evaluated.

The special powers and rights of the states and assemblies guaranteed in the Constitution must be reflected in the law.

Dr Libu K Alexander, Dr E Srikumaran, Dr Muhammadali and Dr Abraham Joseph were also present in the opinion formation committee.
