New Delhi: Harjinder Singh Dhami, the chief of the Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has voiced opposition to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), expressing concerns about the potential erosion of traditions, culture, and the unique identity of minority communities.

This statement follows similar sentiments expressed by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which emphasised the adverse impact the implementation of UCC would have on minority and tribal communities.

Speaking to the media, Chief Dhami stated that the SGPC has taken a firm stand against the implementation of the UCC and is opposed to it. Additionally, he criticised the Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), for interfering in religious matters, which he considered a direct violation of Sikh rights. He also highlighted that the SGPC has already passed a resolution opposing the state government's interference in Sikh religious affairs. He further revealed plans to meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

The Punjab Assembly recently passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aimed at ensuring the free telecast of Gurbani (sacred hymns) from the Golden Temple. However, the SGPC has been opposing this bill, asserting that any amendments to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925 should be made by Parliament.

Responding to questions regarding the broadcasting of Gurbani from the Golden Temple, Chief Dhami emphasised that it was not solely about a specific channel but rather the "undue interference" of the state government in Sikh religious matters. He reaffirmed the SGPC's commitment to preserving Sikh rights and heritage, vowing to prevent any amendments to the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925.

When asked about the possibility of launching a YouTube channel for broadcasting 'Gurbani kirtan' (religious hymns), Chief Dhami mentioned that a sub-committee was currently exploring the matter. The SGPC also expressed concerns about the safety and security of Sikhs residing in Pakistan, urging the government to take proactive measures to protect their well-being.

Chief Dhami was attending the 'Nagar Kirtan' (religious procession) held at Gurdwara Bahadurgarh Sahib.
