Robbers dig 10-foot tunnel in movie style to loot jewellery shop
text_fieldsMeerut: Thieves in Uttar Pradesh dug a 10-foot tunnel through a drain to steal jewellery worth lakhs of rupees from a shop. When the owner arrived in the morning, he found the tunnel running through a drain and into the shop. The shop owner, Piyush Garg, said valuables worth around Rs 10 to Rs 15 lakhs were stolen.
The police said the thieves dismantled bricks and mud from the drain's weak boundary. The exact sum of the loot has not been determined yet. Police said that an investigation has been launched to find the robbers. "We have received a complaint in the matter. We have asked the shop owner to provide a list of actual losses to determine the exact figure of the stolen jewellery," said SHO Upendra Singh.
Meerut Bullion Traders Association members protested against the law and order situation in the city. They said that this is the fourth such robbery in the city. When two police officers arrived at the showroom, the traders did not let them enter and demanded that a senior officer come to probe this robbery and several others that took place in recent weeks.
